How to eat vegan in: El Nido -Philippines

[Hola! Si te cuesta entender ingles por favor lee la información al costado –> si estas en computadora o al final si estas en celular! Gracias :)]

Hi guys! So last summer my friend, my boyfriend and I went to the Philippines and stayed at El Nido for 6-7 days. I remember before going I searched around internet to see if there was going to be vegan options available (there always is but just because I love checking things) and I actually was kinda worried for what I found… Most people said it was really hard, there is no much to eat, pretty much every dish has fish or some other sea friends around. Turns out (as expected anyways) it was really easy to find (REALLY GOOD) vegan food! So if you are planing to go to the Philippines (even if you are not vegan) you should definitely try out this dishes-drinks-places, because they are amazing…

Also a very important detail I must mention is we spent WAY less money that we would have if we ate meat, fish, chesse, etc. (more for  tours and drinks yay!) I am going to talk about only some of my favorites to make it shorter, and there are some days in which I was so hungry that no picture was taken, sorry!

If you enjoy more watching a video than reading a post (and want to see more food and beaches as well) check out our video of the trip!

So, here we go.

How to eat (and drink) vegan in: El Nido -Philippinnes

1. Tours

So I remember being worried for the tours, because with the price of the tour the lunch is included, and there was no way I was not getting any food. So for the first tour we specifically told the tour guides that we eat vegetarian and they told us: no problem there are a lot of veggies, rice and fruits, so basically… paradise. Do not worry, there is TONS of food.

one of the tours actually made us separate veggies as well, so tasty and so nice of them

2. Smoothies!

OK, this is probably one of my favs, OMG the smoothies they sell in this town are A M A Z I N G, we were adicted to them and ended up drinking at least one every day. They are so full of fruit, tasty, filling, tick… Now if you really want to feel amazing as we did after drinking this it is important that you ask for no milk, so you are not drinking unhealthy fats, hormones, toxins and a long list of other bad stuff for you, and they will happily leave the milk out.

Tip: in the smoothies case I believe that the higher prices (sometimes) are worth it, they do use more fruit and taste better. However we travel cheap so we mostly had the 30-40 php (that are also AMAZING) everyday and the 70-80 php every two days or so…

[You can also buy smoothies with alcohol, probably thats why I look so happy on the pic with the orange shirt, don’t mind me…]

3. Curry with rice

We had this maybe 3-4 times just because is SO GOOD, they normally use coconut milk for this, but just be sure to ask for the no milk again 🙂

4. Pancit Canton, Arroz Caldo and more!

Seriously, there are options everywhere, you just need to make some adjustments to the dishes and its done! Everyone in philippines is so welcoming and kind, they really put in practice «the customer is first» policy and are always happy to give you what you asked for

I am pretty sure the name of the noodles was Pancit Canton, please correct me if I remember it wrong. And the bowl that looks like a soup with rice is exacly that, Arroz Caldo! It was only 40 php and was SO GOOD, comfort food level 10

3. Drinks!

As I said we were traveling cheap, and we prefered to to every tour on the list than wasting on fancy drinks, but on the last two days we did go to two very nice bars (on happy hour time of course)

  • SAVA Beach Bar

Here we had 2 piña coladas and 2 mai tai, both really good, but as a fan of pineapples I prefered the piña colada

  • Artcafe

Well… We had piña colada as well here, BUT it had milk, so that wasn’t good… The blue ones however were amazing, better than SAVA I must say… We had 6 different drinks and I can’t remember the names 😦

4. Burgers, Bagels and Sandwiches

They were sooo good omg… For the sandwich we had to ask «only veggies, no cheese no mayo» but was simply done 🙂 For bageles and burgers they already had the vegetarian option so we asked again for «no mayo, no cheese» super simple!

they were crazy good

5. Salads and so so many fruits

Please do not miss out on the amazing fruit they have in this town. As I said before even if you are not vegan/vegetarian I encourage you to stop thinking about this places as everything there is to eat has to come from the sea. The sweetest fruits I have ever tried are there, love love love. We used to go to the fruit shop and just buy kilos of bananas and eat them as we explored the town or the beaches, cheap and tasty, absolutely recommended.
